Hitchcock vs Dawson
HITCHCOCK — The Hitchcock High School boys basketball team was happy to prove it doesn’t need to pick on teams its own size Tuesday night.
The Runnin’ Dawgs just wish they had a better result to show for it.
Hitchcock stepped two classes above their own classification to take on Class 4A Pearland Dawson. Host Hitchcock led by six points with 70 seconds
left in regulation before losing, 73-66, in overtime.
“In our predistrict schedule, we’re looking for teams that can make us better,” first-year coach Steve Adamson said. “Playing a good athletic 4A
school will let us know where we’re at and what we need to do to get better.”
The Runnin’ Dawgs (4-3) led 61-55 on Denzel Martins’ short jumper with 1 minute, 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but an untimely technical foul
assessed to Adamson allowed Dawson to tie the game before giving the ball back to Hitchcock.
The possession began with Craig Grigsby (20 points, six rebounds, four assists) making a layup while getting fouled. Before he shot the bonus free
throw Adamson drew a technical for stepping out of his coach’s box. Grigsby made the first free throw then made 1-of-2 technical free throws to bring
the Eagles within two points.
Piaget Gauthier tied the game with two free throws with 41 seconds left in the game. Hitchcock held for the last shot but only got off a desperation
heave that missed at the buzzer.
“I take responsibility for the technical,” Adamson said. “That was poor on my part. Just like (for example) a kid turning the ball over, it hurt our
team.”
Dawson scored the first basket 30 seconds into overtime, and Hitchcock never caught up.
Hitchcock started the game hot. It took advantage of Dawson’s 2-3 zone and made seven 3-pointers in the first half on its way to a 36-30 lead. The
Eagles came out in a man-to-man defense in the second half and used a 10-point run to take 47-42 lead. The Runnin’ Dawgs responded with six straight
points to end the quarter.
Immanuel Jones had two baskets in the run, and Roddrick Gilmore made a layup at the buzzer. Hitchcock eventually built an eight-point lead with 3:51
left in the fourth quarter.
James Ray led Hitchcock with 13 points and seven assists, and Gilmore scored 11 points. He had three 3-pointers in the first half. Martins, Kohl Filer
and Tyler Sander scored eight points apiece for Hitchcock. Jordan Turner, Davon Kenney (three steals) and Jones (six rebounds) scored six points
apiece.
